Veteran Fire Safety - Fire Evacuation: Best Practice Advise

Use the Stairs

You may have heard that you should never use the lift during a fire, even if it seems like the quickest way out. If the lift loses power, you could become trapped. Additionally, you cannot predict what conditions await you on the floor to which the lift is traveling doors may open to intense heat and smoke. While provisions should be made for individuals who cannot use the stairs (such as evacuation chairs), it is best to use the stairs whenever possible to exit the building safely and quickly.

Get Out and Stay Out

Your top priority during a fire situation, whether it’s a drill or a real emergency, is to leave the building as quickly as possible. Do not make any detours or return for personal belongings, no matter how valuable or sentimental they may be. Fires can be unpredictable, making it difficult to assess the level of structural damage or harmful fumes present. Wasting precious seconds to retrieve your laptop or cherished desk ornament could result in serious injury.

Practice Makes Perfect!

Please take fire drills seriously! We understand that no one enjoys interrupting their workday for a drill—especially when the weather is poor and you find yourself gathering in the parking lot—but knowing escape routes can save lives. At Veteran Fire Safety, our training can include specific evacuation procedures tailored to your business type, such as a school, hotel, or factory.
